Landsvirkjun, an independent legal entity owned by the Icelandic State, hereinafter referred to as the Employer, is planning to expand Þeistareykir geothermal power plant, which has an installed capacity of 90 MWe. The power plant is located at Þeistareykir high temperature geothermal area ca. 28 km southeast of the town of Húsavík in NE Iceland. To further appraise the geothermal resource for enhancement of production the Employer aims to drill two deviated production wells to a length of up to 3000 m into faults beneath the Bæjarfjall mountain to gather steam for the next expansion of the power plant. Temperatures at that depth are expected to be in the range of 340-380°C.

Further the Employer aims to drill a vertical cored exploration well to a depth of 550-750 m south of Bæjarfjall mountain to explore the southerly extend of the geothermal reservoir. Temperatures at that depth are expected to be in the range of 230-270°C.

The Employer is also preparing to reduce the CO2 emissions from Þeistareykir geothermal power plant through the Koldís project by capturing CO2 with the CarbFix method and reinject it back into the geothermal reservoir, where it will be sequestered as minerals (calcite). To develop the CO2 capture system the Employer aims to drill a vertical reinjection well to a depth of 450-750 m that will be located 500 m west of Þeistareykir power plant. Temperatures at that depth are expected to be in the range of 180-240°C. To monitor CO2 sequestration through tracer tests the Employer also aims to drill a vertical monitoring well to a depth of 450-750 m that will be located 800 m NNE of the reinjection well. Temperatures at that depth are expected to be in the range of 150-220°C.

The project will be completed as two independent project phases. Drilling of two production wells beneath Bæjarfjall mountain, injection testing and subsequent monitoring of temperature recovery will represent an independent project phase (LOT-1) as preparation for expansion of Þeistareykir geothermal power plant. Drilling of a reinjection well and a monitoring well and drilling of a cored exploration well (LOT-2) will represent another independent but optional project phase partly under the auspices of the Koldís project.
